Plant Powered Recipes: The Skincare Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric manages microorganism growth on the skin, helping ward off acne-causing bacteria, and prevents other skin infections from spreading, like eczema & rosacea. It also contains powerful antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-microbial properties that assist in balancing skin [pH] levels, sebum secretion, and helps clean out pores.

Turmeric properties for skin health:

  • Turmeric is high in antioxidants that slow down cell damage.
  • Help reduce pigmentation and even out the skin tone.
  • Widely used as a skin exfoliant and improves the texture of the skin.
  • Helps with inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne, dry skin, psoriasis, and eczema.
  • Also said to diminish wrinkles.

Vegan Turmeric Skin Polish Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • ½ tsp Fresh Turmeric (or powdered if you can’t find fresh)
  • 3 tsp Oat or Almond Milk
  • 3 tsp sodium bicarbonate (preferably from a pharmacy)
  • 3 tsp ground Oatmeal (ground oats)

Directions:

Finely grate your fresh turmeric and mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Stir to combine. Using clean hands, massage over clean, damp skin with fingertips starting with your chin and working upward in small circles. Rinse and apply a plant-based moisturiser. Or apply evenly with a make-up brush and leave on skin for 5 minutes. Polish in circular motions for about 1 minute or until skin feels polished. Rinse and follow with moisturizer

Turmeric properties for gut health:
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Pain relief
  • Liver support
  • Digestive support
  • Offers vitamin C, potassium, iron, manganese – all vital nutrients for good health

“Turmeric, and its most active compound curcumin have many scientifically-proven gut health benefits, such as the potential to prevent heart disease, alzheimer’s and cancer. It’s a potent anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant that may also help improve symptoms of depression and arthritis. It also helps to balance the gut [pH] offering anti-bacterial and anti-microbial benefits, assisting in creating good gut health.” Says Nicole

Vegan Turmeric Latte Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups oat milk or milk alternative (almond, soy, rice)
  • 1 tsp freshly grated turmeric or turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp freshly grated ginger or ginger powder
  • ½ tsp agave or maple syrup if desired (the oat milk already tastes sweet, so I find I don’t need extra sweetener)

Directions:

Pour the milk into a saucepan and cook over high heat until it’s hot, but don’t bring it to a boil. Remove from the heat and add the rest of the ingredients. Stir and try the milk, add more milk, turmeric, cinnamon or syrup if needed.  You can also use a milk frother to get a better texture or blend the hot milk with the rest of the ingredients in a blender for that luxurious latte experience.
