Read Your Labels: What's Really in Your Everyday Products?

Read Your Labels: What's Really in Your Everyday Products?

Posted by Nicole Sherwin on

Six episodes in, and we're only just scratching the surface.

We're going to talk about something rather small that has a surprisingly BIG impact on our lives.

The fine print.

Yes, that teeny-tiny writing on the back of your favourite products. The stuff most of us need a magnifying glass, a degree in chemistry, and possibly a stiff cup of tea to decipher.

Welcome to the world of Read Your Labels.

We've now shared six episodes of this little series on our socials, and I thought it was time to tell you why I started it in the first place.

Because, like most things in my life, there's a story behind the story.

It all began with a question...

Do we really know what we're using every single day?

Not just our skincare. Our shampoos. Our toothpaste. Our cleaning products. Our deodorants. Our food.

All those ordinary, everyday things that become so much a part of our routines that we barely give them a second thought.

We read the beautiful promises on the front of the packaging. The clever marketing. The words like natural, pure, clean, gentle and good for you.

But how often do we turn the product around?

How often do we ask what those ingredients actually are, why they're there, and whether they're right for us?

That question became the spark for Read Your Labels.

My own wake-up call

Many of you know that my journey into natural skincare wasn't born in a boardroom or dreamed up as a clever business opportunity.

It began with my own health.

After experiencing heavy metal poisoning and the havoc it wreaked on my skin and wellbeing, I found myself questioning almost everything I had previously taken for granted.

What was I eating? What was I applying to my skin? What was I exposing myself to in my everyday environment? I became curious. Then fascinated. And eventually rather obsessed with understanding ingredients and the relationship between our daily choices and our health.

It changed the way I lived. And ultimately, it changed the direction of my life.

Eco Diva Natural was born from that journey, and twelve years later, my curiosity hasn't faded one little bit.

If anything, it's grown.

The everyday things we don't think about

Here's what fascinates me. We might spend hours researching the perfect holiday, the best restaurant, or which new phone to buy. But the products we use on our bodies, in our homes and around our families?

Often, we simply trust the packaging. And I'm not suggesting we should live in fear of every ingredient with a complicated name. Absolutely not.

Natural doesn't automatically mean safe. Synthetic doesn't automatically mean harmful. And a long scientific name isn't necessarily a red flag.

What matters is understanding what an ingredient does, how much of it we're exposed to, how frequently we use it, and what the evidence actually tells us.

Some ingredients can irritate sensitive skin. Certain fragrances may trigger reactions in susceptible people. Some substances raise environmental concerns because of how they persist or behave after being washed down our drains.

And sometimes, an ingredient is perfectly reasonable to use, despite having a name that sounds like it belongs in a science-fiction movie.

That's why knowledge matters.

Not panic. Not sensationalism.

Knowledge.

Six episodes. One very important conversation.

When I started Read Your Labels, I wanted to make ingredient literacy accessible, interesting, and maybe even a little entertaining.

I believe education should be fun? At least that's the way I like to learn.

What excites me most isn't simply sharing information.

It's the possibility that someone, somewhere, might pick up a product, turn it around, and ask a question they wouldn't have asked before.

That tiny moment of curiosity is where change begins. And the more we ask questions, the more we encourage brands to be transparent, responsible and thoughtful about what they create.

We have more influence than we sometimes realise.

Every purchase is a choice. Every question is an opportunity. And every informed consumer helps shape the kind of marketplace we want to see.

What about the planet?

Of course, this conversation doesn't stop at our bathroom cabinets.

The ingredients we use, the packaging we discard, and the products we rinse down our drains can all have environmental consequences.

For me, caring for ourselves and caring for the planet have never been separate conversations. They're beautifully connected. And that's why I believe conscious consumption isn't about being perfect.

It's about paying attention.

Choosing thoughtfully where we can. Asking better questions. Supporting businesses that take responsibility. And remembering that even the smallest changes can be meaningful.

So here's my little invitation this SUNDaze...

Next time you reach for something you use every day, turn it around.

Read the label.

Choose one ingredient you don't recognise and look it up using a reliable source.

Ask what it does. Ask whether it's necessary.

And perhaps most importantly, ask whether that product still deserves a place in your daily ritual.

You don't need to throw everything out, replace your entire bathroom cabinet, or become an overnight ingredient expert.

Start with one product.

One question.

One small moment of awareness.

Because the goal of Read Your Labels has never been to tell you what to think.

It's to inspire you to think for yourself.

And if there's one thing I've learned on this extraordinary journey, it's that becoming more conscious of the little things can change the way we experience the big things.

So tell me, beautiful humans...

Have you ever turned a product around, read the ingredients, and been genuinely surprised by what you discovered?

I'd love to hear about it. And if there's an ingredient or everyday product you'd like me to explore in a future episode, send it my way.

We're only six episodes in, and there is SO much more to uncover.

Here's to curiosity, conscious choices, and the beautiful art of paying attention.

With love and a little label-reading mischief,

Nicole x
