Off-Grid Get-Away at Copia Eco Luxury Cabins

If you feel like a break from the hustle and bustle of busy life, going off-grid for a cozy weekend is the best natural medicine for your heart & soul. Copia Eco Luxury Cabins is a fine bit of soul healing. Situated on a functioning farm near Botriver,  Copia is completely off grid and uses only solar electricity. Made from shipping containers, the cabins boast a fully fitted kitchen, lounge area, fire place, king size bed and oval bath with separate shower. The container is all open plan.

“I became obsessed with used container conversions and the endless possibilities all while doing my little bit to recycle. I always knew that I would like to do something on our family farm and when I sold my business in 2015 I decided to take the leap and start my own container conversion project.” says owner, Lucas Steyn

If you’re a cellphone addict, this place is not for you. Or, it’s exactly what you need to curb your modern-day addiction. WiFi coverage is very infrequent, which either makes you frustrated or totally at peace with the environment around you. We chose the latter and with that, the one night stay felt like a week away.

The highlight was the wood fire hot tub situated outside on the balcony and overlooking the beautiful farm valley. A first in South Africa, the Kolkol hot tub works with no installation and no electricity usage. It’s light, easy to handle, easy to move around and also only takes a 5th of the heating time of conventional hot tubs. It’s made of ultra light, but very sturdy material and filled with self expanding foam. It does not need an electrical outlet or installation. The water is heated via an aluminium wood-fired stove which fits neatly into a corner and is well shielded to prevent injuries. As the wood burns, the water heats up to a lovely hot bath temperature. It is delightfully relaxing and rejuvenating.
