A Women’s Day invitation to do less, feel more, and come home to yourself.
There is a particular kind of power in slowing down. Not the kind that announces itself. Not the kind that asks us to achieve more, become more, fix more or prove more.
A quieter kind of power.
The kind that appears when we stop long enough to hear ourselves again. Today, as we move through Women’s Day in South Africa, I find myself thinking about how much women carry.
We hold families. Businesses. Relationships. Homes. Ideas. Dreams. Expectations. Other people. And somewhere amongst all that holding, we can forget to hold ourselves.
Perhaps that is why slowing down can feel almost radical.
Slow is a skincare ingredient.
I’ve been thinking about this sentence a lot lately. Because it isn’t really only about skincare. It is about how we live.
Nature rarely rushes. Skin doesn’t renew overnight. Healing doesn’t follow a deadline. Relationships deepen over time. Gardens grow season by season. Wisdom arrives through living.
Beautiful things happen slowly. And perhaps we do, too. When we slow down, something changes.
We notice.
The warmth of water on our skin.
The smell of something cooking.
The feeling of bare feet on the earth.
The person sitting opposite us.
Our own breath.
A skincare ritual stops being another task to complete and becomes a few quiet minutes of connection with ourselves.
A cup of tea becomes a pause.
A walk becomes somewhere to be rather than somewhere to get.
These moments may look insignificant from the outside.
But I increasingly believe this is where a beautiful life is actually made.
The practice of living well
We are surrounded by messages telling us that wellbeing is something we need to achieve. The perfect morning routine. The perfect skin. The perfect body. The perfect diet.
The perfectly balanced life.
But living well isn’t a destination.
It is a practice.
And sometimes the most nourishing thing we can practise is doing less. Leaving space between things. Putting the phone down. Taking the long way home. Massaging your face slowly instead of rushing through your skincare. Sitting in the sun for five minutes.
Saying no.
Resting without needing to earn it. Allowing yourself to simply be where you are.
An invitation for Women’s Day
So this Women’s Day, I don’t want to give you another list of things to do.
Quite the opposite.
I want to offer you an invitation.
Slow down.
Take a moment.
Listen to what your body has been trying to tell you.
Notice what you need.
Notice what you don’t need anymore.
And perhaps create one small ritual that belongs entirely to you.
It doesn’t need to be impressive.
It doesn’t need to be photographed.
It doesn’t even need to be productive.
It simply needs to bring you back to yourself. Because caring for ourselves isn’t another achievement to add to the list.
It is a relationship.
One we practise quietly, imperfectly and repeatedly over a lifetime. And perhaps that is the real magic of slowing down.
We begin to notice that the life we have been rushing towards is already happening.
Right here.
Today.
Take a moment.
Beautiful things happen slowly.
With love,
