Rooted in Africa: The Heritage Ingredients Behind Eco Diva Natural

Rooted in Africa: The Heritage Ingredients Behind Eco Diva Natural

Posted by Nicole Sherwin on

Heritage is a beautiful word, isn’t it? It carries the people who came before us, the stories we grew up with, the recipes passed down through generations, the songs we know by heart, the landscapes that shaped us and the tiny family traditions that make absolutely no sense to anyone outside the family.

Heritage is the way your grandmother did something without ever needing to Google it.

It's memory, wisdom and belonging. But I don’t believe heritage should live only in old photographs, museums or once-a-year celebrations. Heritage is alive. We bring it into the present through the food we prepare, the stories we tell, the businesses we build and the choices we make every day.

At Eco Diva Natural, it also lives in the ingredients we choose.

Long before the beauty world began calling plants “superfoods”, African communities understood the value of the extraordinary trees, fruits, seeds and botanicals growing around them. These ingredients were used as food, medicine, moisturisers, remedies and rituals of care.

Our ancestors may not have spoken about skin barriers, fatty-acid profiles or oxidative stress over tea, but they certainly understood the language of nature. , hasn't nature always been rather clever?

A modern skincare ritual, rooted in ancient plant wisdom

Eco Diva Natural was born in South Africa, and that African identity has always been part of our DNA.

We formulate with nutrient-rich plant oils, botanical extracts, minerals and superfoods that help nourish the skin rather than fight with it. Among them are some truly remarkable African ingredients, including baobab, marula, shea and argan.

They are not included simply because they sound exotic or look lovely on a label. Each one is chosen for what it brings to the formula and for the way it supports our philosophy of skin health:

Feed your skin what it understands.

Let’s meet a few of our African favourites.

Baobab: Africa’s magnificent Tree of Life

If ever a tree knew something about resilience, it would be the baobab.

Growing across some of Africa’s driest landscapes, the baobab has sustained communities for generations. Its fruit, seeds, leaves and bark have traditionally been used in food, household preparations and wellbeing rituals.

Baobab seed oil is naturally rich in fatty acids, including oleic and linoleic acids, which help soften the skin and support its moisture barrier. Research into topical baobab seed oil has also found moisturising, hydrating and moisture-sealing properties. (NIH)

For the skin, this means:

  • Helping to reduce moisture loss
  • Softening dry or rough-feeling skin
  • Supporting suppleness and elasticity
  • Nourishing the skin with essential fatty acids
  • Helping the complexion feel more comfortable and balanced

You will find baobab in our Superfood Face Serum, Ecofoliant Natural Skin Polish, Hydrating Masque and Liquid Vitamin Hydra Mist.

In the Ecofoliant, finely milled baobab seed powder helps polish away dullness while bringing antioxidant-rich nourishment to the ritual. In our serum, masque and mist, baobab oil or fruit powder helps replenish skin that feels dry, depleted or simply a little tired of adulting.

Baobab is strong, deeply rooted and wonderfully generous. Rather like the women I admire most.

Marula: Africa’s silky skin and hair nourisher

The marula tree is indigenous to large parts of Southern Africa and has a long relationship with African food, culture and community life. Its name is even connected to the Tswana word morula. (pza.sanbi.org)

The oil pressed from the marula kernel is a beautiful natural emollient. It is rich in fatty acids and has been studied for its moisturising, hydrating and occlusive qualities, meaning it helps soften the skin and reduce the loss of moisture from its surface. It was also found to be non-irritating in the published study. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

Marula helps to:

  • Deeply condition and soften the skin
  • Support the skin’s protective barrier
  • Lock in moisture without a heavy, waxy feeling
  • Improve the feel of dry, tight or weather-stressed skin
  • Nourish dry, brittle or frizz-prone hair

You will find marula in our Superfood Face Serum, Hydrating Masque, Vitamin Body Oil and pHRESH Shampoo + Conditioner in 1.

On your face, it feels silky and replenishing. On your body, it gives that deliciously nourished glow. In your hair ritual, it helps soften, condition and calm frizz.

A rather impressive CV for one little kernel.

Shea butter: the comforting one

Shea butter is produced from the nuts of the shea tree, which is native to sub-Saharan Africa. It has long been used to protect and nourish skin in hot, dry and demanding climates.

Rich, creamy and deeply comforting, shea butter acts as an emollient, helping to soften the skin and limit moisture loss. Its fatty-acid content makes it particularly lovely for dry, sensitive or compromised-feeling skin.

Think of shea as the ingredient equivalent of being wrapped in a soft blanket and told to stop checking your emails.

It helps to:

  • Replenish very dry skin
  • Soften rough patches
  • Support the skin’s natural protective barrier
  • Comfort skin that feels tight or sensitive
  • Keep lips and body skin feeling supple

You will find shea butter in our Ultimate Face Cream, Crème Brûlée Body Butter, DivaGlow Shimmer Body Butter and Superfood Lip Balm.

It is one of the reasons these formulas feel so cocooning and nourishing, without the need for artificial fragrance, silicones or petroleum-based fillers.

Argan: nourishing wisdom from North Africa

Argan oil comes from Morocco and the argan-growing regions of North Africa, where the tree and its oil have deep cultural and economic importance.

The oil is naturally rich in nourishing fatty acids and vitamin E compounds. In skincare and haircare, it helps condition, soften and protect against dryness.

We use argan in our Superfood Face Serum and pHRESH Shampoo + Conditioner in 1, where it works alongside baobab and marula to nourish the skin, calm unruly hair and support natural softness and shine.

Because some days our hair needs ancestral wisdom. And some days it simply needs help.

More than ingredients in a bottle

When we speak about heritage, we must also speak about respect.

African botanical wisdom is not a beauty trend invented by modern marketing. It is part of a much older relationship between people and plants: observing, learning, harvesting, preparing and passing knowledge forward.

To honour this heritage means more than borrowing a beautiful ingredient name. It means recognising where that knowledge came from. It means choosing ingredients thoughtfully, formulating responsibly and creating products that genuinely serve the skin.

It also means remembering that Africa is not one story, one culture or one landscape. Our botanical heritage stretches across forests, savannahs, deserts, coastlines, mountains and countless communities, each with its own knowledge and traditions.

That richness deserves to be celebrated with care.

Heritage is something we practise

Heritage can be grand, but it can also be wonderfully ordinary. It can be the meal you make because your mother made it. The remedy your father taught you. The Sunday ritual that brings everyone back to the table. The way you tend a garden, welcome a guest or care for your body.

It's not only what we inherit. It is what we choose to carry forward.

For me, bringing heritage into Eco Diva Natural means creating modern skincare that remembers where it comes from. It means celebrating African ingredients not as a passing trend, but as part of a living story of nourishment, resourcefulness and our deep connection to the natural world.

Every time you smooth marula oil over your skin, activate a baobab-rich masque or massage a nourishing superfood serum into your face, you are doing more than completing another step in a routine.

You are taking part in a ritual of care that has roots.

And perhaps that is the most beautiful thing about heritage: it reminds us that while we are each creating our own story, none of us begins from an empty page. We are rooted, connected and constantly becoming.

With love,
Nicole
